Arsenal vs. Newcastle

7-3, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-11-29
Walcott 20, 73, 92,
Oxlade-Chamberlain 51,
Podolski 64,
Giroud 85, 87

Typical Boxing Day game (which we, sadly, missed out on) packed with drama, and what better game to finish the year with..? This game was all about outpacing our opponents, credit to Newcastle for keeping up with us for about seventy minutes, but after that we definitely finished the game on top. Which really is not very surprising considering that both Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain started the game, with Theo up-front yet again, and what a brilliant job he did!

Just as the game had begun Oxlade-Chamberlain fired away a shot, even though it was rather wide it was definitely positive to see us firing away right from the start! Ba provided an early warning of what was to come later as he headed the ball just over the bar after approximately fifteen minutes. Then, twenty minutes into the game, we took the lead for the first of four times in this game! Theo Walcott was released down the right-hand side and dispatched his shot at the far post, a truly trademark goal for the Englishman, arguably something he has picked up from Thierry Henry over the year (who, by the way, is back and training with us). As the first half drew to a close there was quite some action left in store for us, first Walcott got close to repeating his goal, this time it was saved by the keeper though. Then Tiote had a sizzling shot saved by Szczesny before our keeper had to watch the ball hit the back of the net as a free-kick took a touch off of Wilshere. In the last minute of the half Szczesny made a fine save from a Marveux shot to keep the scoreline at 1-1 for the half-time.

As one might have gathered from the result, the second half was rather explosive. It began with us taking back our lead through a brilliant shot by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that went straight into the back of the net! At the hour-mark Newcastle equalised for the second time as our defence completely lost track of Marveux in the box. Just two minutes after that Cazorla had a powerful shot saved by the keeper and Podolski got close but the keeper beat him to the ball. However, just a minute later Lukas Podolski managed to beat the keeper (at last) with a close-range header following Wilshere's cross. This game seemed destined to end as a draw as Ba equalised for the third time for Newcastle five minutes after our third leading goal. Fortunately for us, that was the last time that Newcastle managed to keep up with our pace and our fourth goal came merely four minutes after Ba's equaliser. Once again it was Theo Walcott who, clearly relishing in his new role up-front, fired into the top corner of the goal as Gibbs' cross found him. It is, however, important to remember that Newcastle did come close to scoring just minutes later but Szczesny provided a decent save to deny them. With about ten minutes left Walcott, seeking a hat-trick, had a shot deflected wide before turning provider for substitute Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman headed the ball home from a brilliant cross by Walcott and two minutes later the substitute, Olivier Giroud, doubled his tally with a superbly shot, yet again assisted by Walcott. However, the English striker did not let the Frenchman steal the show as he scored a stunning solo goal in the final minutes, let me repeat: an absolutely stunning solo goal. Theo Walcott scored one of those goals that words just cannot simply do justice, it has to be seen (which is why I have embedded a video from Swedish television in this post). Well, I have to at least make an attempt at describing it, so here goes nothing: He zig-zagged his way through the Newcastle defence, was brought down yet managed to get past the last defender by going beneath him and then quickly rising to, cool as you like, chip the ball over the keeper into the back of the net!! Mind-blowing stuff from the striker to complete his hat-trick and I believe that I am not the only fan desperately wanting him to sign another contract at the club! In the very last minute Giroud should have made an hat-trick for himself (which is quite incredible considering his limited amount of time on the pitch), but his effort unfortunately struck the woodwork instead of the net.

So, I guess we can call this ending the year on a high..? Let's hope that 2013 will continue as 2012 ended, with completely stunning games from start to finish, great games of football with some truly amazing goals thrown in there as well.

Oh and, do I need to say who was the official Man Of The Match?

Injury Update:
- Mertesacker caught an illness before the game and was not able to make it back for this game.
- Fabianski is currently the only player sidelined with an injury, which is quite remarkable!

Wigan vs. Arsenal

1-0, Premier League, DW Stadium, 2012-12-22
Arteta 60

This game turned out to be quite different from the last one! Wigan played really well in this game, either that or we played considerably worse compared to the Reading game. Thankfully that did not matter and we've got an early Christmas gift in the shape of being third in the league, which is remarkable considering where we were just some weeks ago.

Wigan started this game a lot better than we did, we were generally poor throughout the entire first half as we did not create many chances. The only chances of note that we created were two shots on goal that were both saved by the 'keeper from Oxlade-Chamberlain (who received the man of the match award) and Podolski.

However, we upped our game in the second half and the pace of the game increased. Not even five minutes into the half Oxlade-Chamberlain played the ball to Walcott, whose shot was unfortunately parried by the 'keeper. The Englishman played up-front for the second game running and at the hour-mark he was clipped from behind in the box and we were awarded with a penalty. Mikel Arteta stepped up to take it and he converted it with ease to give us the lead! After the goal it was just a matter of us holding onto the lead and endure for the rest of the half, Walcott had a decent free-kick attempt with fifteen minutes to go that went over the bar.

Even though this was no stunning victory, it was vital for us to win the game even if we were not at our best. Now we can celebrate Christmas having gone past Tottenham in the league table, a truly magnificent Christmas gift!

Champions League Last 16 Draw

We have been drawn against Bayern Munich for the first knock-out stage of the Champions League. It goes without saying that this is some really tough opponents but it's not over till it's over and we can definitely beat them as long as we come together as a team!

Reading vs. Arsenal

5-2, Premier League, Madejski Stadium, 2012-12-17
Podolski 14,
Cazorla 32, 35, 60,
Walcott 80

For the first time in what feels like forever Arsenal produced a mind-blowing performance! We were brilliant for the majority of the game, as the scoreline will show. Tons of chances were created from many different players and it was truly great to see it!

Just about fifteen minutes into the first half we opened the scoring through Lukas Podolski, whose shot went into the back of the net from close range after a great cross from Gibbs. However, we truly brought the heat half an hour into the game when Cazorla scored twice within three minutes to grant us an astonishing first half lead. His first was quite a shocker, suddenly Santi Cazorla popped up in the box to score with a header! The most likely shortest player on the pitch got to score with a header.. Remarkable. A couple of minutes later he did it again, although not with his head. Walcott crossed the ball to Gibbs, who headed it down for Santi Cazorla to fire a quick shot into goal! Right before half-time Oxlade-Chamberlain got close with a header from Sagna's cross, it was saved by the 'keeper though.

We started the first half in like fashion as the first as Walcott came close to scoring, unfortunately the ball was cleared in the last second  by a defender. However, fifteen minutes into the half out new Spaniard got to complete his first hat-trick in the Premier League. Podolski found him in the box, and Santi Cazorla had no difficulties tapping the ball into the back of the net. We appeared to get a bit complacent after that fourth goal and made some sloppy mistakes that led to Reading pulling two goals back. Yet, we got the last say of the game as our central striker for the day, Theo Walcott, got to fire away a wonderful shot due to an assist from Cazorla.

It was indeed great to watch the Arsenal in this game, hopefully we will keep up the good work as it was stunning at times in this game. Cazorla had an outstanding game, not to forget Walcott's performance up-front. Everything seemed to click in this game and it was definitely vital as we now find ourselves in fifth place for the hectic Christmas period!

Injury Update:
- Walcott made it back for this game from his recent injury problems.

Bradford vs. Arsenal

1-1 (Bradford won penalties 3-2), Capital One Cup, Coral Windows Stadium, 2012-12-11
Vermaelen 88

We were close to recreate a similar (though somewhat less spectacular) comeback as in the last cup game against Reading, but we did not seem to have the same urgency or luck as in that amazing game and in the end it was just another disappointing evening.

With the line-up that we had for this game, players such as Podolski and Gervinho in the starting eleven, you more or less expected us to beat the league two side that is Bradford. Yet things seldom are as easy as they may appear on paper in England and we found ourselves 0-1 down after fifteen minutes. Then they would have increased their lead mere minutes later, had it not been for Gibbs' clearing on the line. Right before the half-time Coquelin had a shot off the post and Gervinho had a shot off-target just two yards from the goal.

In the second half we kept looking for that equalizer, but we never looked that very likely to get it. That is, until the very last minutes when our captain, Thomas Vermaelen, headed the ball into the back of the net as Cazorla provided an excellent cross!

During the extra-time we had two brilliant chances to win the game, first there was a header from Sagna that was cleared off the line. Then there was a sizzling shot from Santi Cazorla that hit the bar from 25 yards out!

As we failed to score from those two opportunities the game went on to penalties, and we had quite the nightmare start. Bradford scored their first two while Cazorla's penalty was saved by the 'keeper and Chamakh hit the post. Then Szczesny saved the next penalty from Bradford and Wilshere fired the ball into the back of the net to score our first penalty. Bradford then scored as did Oxlade-Chamberlain, next up was Bradford and Szczesny provided yet another vital save. Thomas Vermaelen stepped up to take the next penalty, with the knowledge that if he missed we would be out, and for the second time during the penalty shoot-out we hit the post. Meaning that the final result of the penalties was 3-2 to Bradford.

This was obviously immensely disappointing, as we were so close to turning yet another cup game around and qualify for the semi-finals. At the end of the day we just weren't good enough, so let's look ahead and prepare for the game against Reading on Monday.

Injury Update:
- We currently have Walcott, Santos, Koscielny and Diaby sidelined with injuries.
- Giroud got a kick in the back in the last game and did not recover for this game.

Arsenal vs. West Bromwich Albion

2-0, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-12-08
Arteta 26, 64

We dominated this game from start to finish, there was no questioning who deserved to win. However, it is always unfortunate when you score dubious penalties, fortunately that was not the only goal scored today! What matters most is that we are back on track after a rough couple of weeks.

As mentioned above, we dominated this game and the first half was no exception. But there is definitely still room for improvement as we created few clear-cut chances and were offside way too many times. Our first good chance came after five minutes when Gervinho got close after some chaos in the box, unfortunately he did not get a clean hit on the ball so the shot did not find its way into the back of the net.
About ten minutes into the game Cazorla had a decent shot from a distance, but it went wide. Oxlade-Chamberlain looked fresh throughout the game today and provided lots of good crosses, his first real good cross was met by Cazorla, who could not manage to keep it on-target.
West Bromwich did not have many chances whatsoever, but Brunt came quite close with a shot midway through the half that went wide. The following minutes proved very eventful for us and they started with a great run from Gervinho, unfortunately it was rendered useless as he did not find a fellow team-mate with his cross.
Then came the dubious penalty, Cazorla fell in the box and it looked rather cheap. At least this meant that Mikel Arteta could get retribution from the Fulham game as he scored from the penalty spot with a risky strike in the centre of the goal.
It has been priceless to have Wilshere back in the squad and he got extremely close when Gervinho provided a brilliant cross, however the young Englishman did not get enough onto the ball to score. Then Gervinho had a go himself with a decent shot, but it was saved by the 'keeper. In the last minute of the half Oxlade-Chamberlain tried out an acrobatic over-head kick, without any success.

The second half looked pretty much the same as the first, with us in clear domination when it came to both possession and chances created. Fifteen minutes into the half Gervinho had yet another strike that got close, but he just could not seem to score in this game.
The game was more or less punctuated when we got our second penalty of the game. Oxlade-Chamberlain was awarded with a penalty when he was brought down harshly in the box, this time it was certainly not a dubious penalty. Mikel Arteta scored yet again from the penalty spot and yet again he chose to put it in the centre of the goal!
With about ten minutes to go the Spaniard got close with a free-kick, but it went just wide of the goal. Podolski rounded the game off with a shot from close-range that was somehow put over the bar from a brilliant pass by Wilshere.

It was definitely an extreme relief to win this game, given the latest results and the way we have played. The one aspect of our game that I was the most satisfied with today was our midfield trio. It was a pure joy to watch Arteta, Cazorla and Wilshere link-up in the midfield and control our game with flair.

Injury Update:
- Walcott is injured once again, needless to say it is disappointing.

Olympiacos vs. Arsenal

1-2, Champions League, Karaiskakis Stadium, 2012-12-04
Rosicky 38

Fortunately we had already qualified for the knock-out stages ahead of this game, so it was not a game that we had to win. However, it is always immensely disappointing when you lead at half-time and then end up losing the game.

Olympiacos started the game better and came close to scoring  after about ten minutes. Then Ramsey had a golden opportunity to score when Oxlade-Chamberlain crossed the ball into the box and Chamakh headed it down, but Ramsey misjudged the ball and did not get a shot away. After about twenty minutes Szczesny made a great save on the goal-line and was called into action several times in the minutes to come. Even though we never looked very likely to score we somehow managed to do it! Gervinho played a brilliant pass back to Tomas Rosicky, whose shot was placed right by the post, impossible to save!

We completely failed to show up for the second half, leading to a complete turnaround of the scoreline. Olympiacos equalized about twenty minutes into the half, minutes later they had a header just wide of the goal and three minutes after that they took the lead.

Even though this game was not the most important of games and a lot of the players were rested, I am concerned. We have not played well in the past couple of games (as the results definitely indicates) and I really cannot see us winning any game, no matter the opposition, if we continue this trend. We look uninspired and tired for the majority of the games, our amazing passing system seems like a long, lost memory.

Injury Update:
- Rosicky started this game and looked really good, he will hopefully be back in full-fitness soon!

Arsenal vs. Swansea

0-2, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-12-01

Needless to say, these are the games that we have to win. When we looked to be heading for a goalless draw I was disappointed, when Swansea began scoring I could not help but feeling that we are a hopeless case.

Swansea were great throughout the entire game, they started the first half as the by far better team. Szczesny made two great saves after about fifteen minutes to deny Swansea an early lead. Then we worked our way into the half. Jenkinson provided several brilliant crosses, one which was met by Cazorla, his header was comfortably dealt with by the 'keeper though. Just before that chance Podolski had a shot blocked by a defender after receiving the ball from Wilshere. In the last minute of the half Gervinho had a header that unfortunately went wide. Overall it was a disappointing half, we created close to nothing whilst looking vulnerable in the back.

That, however, seemed to change in the second half as we started the half better. Cazorla had several sizzling shouts throughout the entire half, unfortunately for us they all went straight into the arms of the 'keeper. The minute before Swansea's first goal we had our chance to win the game when Oxlade-Chamberlain crossed the ball to Vermaelen, but the defender's header went straight at the Swansea 'keeper, as most of our chances today. Then Swansea scored twice within three minutes to both win and seal the game.

I just feel immense disappointment in the team, we never looked like we were going to win this game and that has to change fast, we may not have a shot at the title but we have to at least reach that fourth spot!

Injury Update:
- Sagna picked up an injury in the previous game and had to sit this one out.
- Rosicky returned from a long-term injury in this game.

Everton vs. Arsenal

1-1, Premier League, Goodison Park, 2012-11-28
Walcott 1

We may not have lost too many games so far this season, but we have drawn way too many instead.

The first half was quite eventful, though the only good chance we had we actually scored from and that was in the very first minute! Theo Walcott started the move as he played the ball to Ramsey, who passed it back to the young Englishman at once and Theo curbed the ball gracefully past the Everton 'keeper Howard and into the back of the net. Just four minutes into the game Koscielny picked up an injury and Gibbs made his comeback from the bench! Unfortunately for us we did not manage to hold onto the lead and Fellaini equalized for Everton after about half an hour with a rather long-distance shot.

Everton began the second half as the better team and Szczesny had to make some amazing saves. Slowly we began to get back in the game and build up some urgency and pressure. When there was approximately twenty minutes to go Giroud had a header that went just wide of the goal and just two minutes later Ramsey's shot almost found the back of the net, but Howard managed to get a hand in the way just in time. Then, with fifteen minutes to go, Cazorla had a decent shot that was parried by Howard and with just ten minutes left we had a brilliant chance to score. Unfortunately Giroud's cross was just to high for Gervinho to reach. In the last of the added minutes Everton came really close with two good chances, but we held onto the point.

Even though playing Everton at Goodison Park is always quite a challenge and you should usually be pleased with a draw, I cannot help but feel huge disappointment. As mentioned above, we have drawn way too many games this season and it will not do if we are to win anything. On a positive note we did play significantly better in this game than against Aston Villa last weekend, somehow we seemed to find some more energy for this game, which might be down to the fact that Walcott came in to inject some pace into our game. Next game for us is Swansea this weekend, let's just hope that we can get back to winning!

Injury Update:
- Gibbs and Rosicky were both back on the bench for this game.
- No news as to how serious Koscielny's injury is yet.

Aston Villa vs. Arsenal

0-0, Premier League, Villa Park, 2012-11-24

We looked tired from start to finish in this game, I believe it is enough to mention the fact that we only had one shot at goal to give an accurate impression of this game.

The only goal scored in the game was an offside goal by Aston Villa in the first half, that was also pretty much the only thing worth mentioning from that half.

The second half was no better, the only thing worth mentioning is that we were lucky not to concede when Aston Villa hit the bar with about ten minutes to go.

I really do not know what else to write than we were poor, really poor. Hopefully we can find some energy for the game against Everton on Tuesday, otherwise I fear we are in for anther dreadfully boring evening.

Injury Update:
- Gibbs was back for this game, which needless to say is a massive boost for us.

Arsenal vs. Montpellier

2-0, Champions League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-11-21
Wilshere 49,
Podolski 63

It was rather vital for us to win this game, and win it we did!

After a slow start to the game we grew into the game and ended the half by far the better side, even though we failed to break the deadlock. Our best chance of the first half came after ten minutes when Koscielny (of all people) fired a sizzling shot that hit the crossbar. About midway through the half Giroud had a shot that went wide and Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot was saved by the 'keeper. After approximately half an hour Koscielny got into a shooting position again, he fired wide this time around, though. As the half drew to a close Podolski had two shots within two minutes, the first after a brilliant run by Wilshere and the second after playing a one-two with Cazorla, unfortunately both shots went wide. It was frustrating for us to fail at taking advantage of all the chances we had, but fortunately a game is played over two halves.

We started the second half by succeeding in what we failed at in the first half, namely scoring! After four minutes Vermaelen crossed the ball into the box where Giroud headed the ball down for Jack Wilshere to score from! I cannot think of anyone who would have deserved that goal more than Jack, after seventeen months on the sideline the young Englishman is well and truly back. Before long we found the back of the net again, in quite some style. Yet again it was Giroud who set the goal up, but tons of credit to Lukas Podolski for his finish, he volleyed the ball home! A truly magnificent strike! Cazorla nearly scored himself with fifteen minutes to go, but his shot was tipped over the bar by the 'keeper. With ten minutes to go Giroud almost scored a goal of his own, however, yet again the Montpellier 'keeper proved his worth with a fine save. Just a couple of minutes later Arteta had a free kick that went just wide of the goal, it seemed as though we were not meant to score a third goal this evening.

With this result our prospect of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the Champions League is certain since Schalke won against Olympiacos! The only bad news is that it means that we will finish in second place, but  it is not as though we could have expected to finish top of the group after that home game against Schalke.

Injury Update:
- Walcott missed out on this game due to a short-term shoulder injury.

Arsenal vs. Tottenham

5-2, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-11-17
Mertesacker 24,
Podolski 42,
Giroud 45 + 1,
Cazorla 61,
Walcott 90 + 1

What a game! These North London Derbies will always be heated, but recently they have also been bountiful with goals. Even though we started off both halves poorly we managed to repeat the feat of last season and beat Tottenham 5-2 at the Emirates. At occasions we had an absolutely stunning game, playing the game the way it should be played with a brilliant passing game and lots of chances to score!

As mentioned, we had a real slow start to the first half and within ten minutes Tottenham had scored twice, the first was ruled offside but the second was a result of some really poor defending. Mertesacker lost track of Defoe, whose shot was saved (barely) by Szczesny (who is now back after two months!) but the rebound was put in the back of the net by none other than Adebayor. However, that joy was short-lived for Adebayor as he was shown the red card for a tackle on Cazorla, it was definitely the right call as the Tottenham striker came in with his studs, hitting Cazorla on the foot. Fortunately, Cazorla did not pick up an injury and could continue the game. As might have been predicted we started to build up pressure on Tottenham, temporary left-back Vermaelen had a decent shot blocked by a defender before the equalizer came. Walcott provided a great cross that was met perfectly by our German defender, Per Mertesacker, who headed the ball into the top corner of the goal! We had another brilliant chance from a header a short while later, a free-kick taken by Wilshere found Giroud, unfortunately the header was saved by Lloris this time around. A minute after that Cazorla had a sizzling shot that went just over the bar, pressure was building. Close to ten minutes later Giroud had another great header saved by Lloris, from a Sagna cross. Then came the closing minutes of the game and with them came the winning goals. After some brilliant link-up play by Arteta and Wilshere the ball found its way to Lukas Podolski, whose shot took a deflection on a defender to go into the back of the net right by the post! During the added time of the first half our new French striker made it three goals in three matches for himself as Cazorla showed his worth with a stunning run where he somehow managed to get back on his feet after a harsh tackle and continued down the pitch to cross the ball perfectly to Olivier Giroud, who scored with a shot that had plenty of both precision and power!

Like the first half we had a slow start to the second half, Tottenham had a good first fifteen minutes before we more or less finished the game off. After those first fifteen minutes Giroud won a header, Walcott played the ball to Podolski who crossed the ball to Santi Cazorla and the Spaniard finished the great move off with a brilliant run and a terrific goal! In the next couple of minutes we maintained a good pressure on Tottenham with plenty of play in and around the box and Giroud found himself in a decent shooting position, but unfortunately his shot went wide. With approximately twenty minutes to go Tottenham pulled one back, bringing back some nerves into the game. Fortunately that proved fruitless as the scoreline would end up exactly like it did last spring at the Emirates. Chamberlain made a great run and passed the ball to Theo Walcott, who scored with a powerful shot! The English striker/winger has been brilliant in the recent games, especially when he makes those central runs typical for a central striker. There has been a lot of talk about where he will end up and I do not think anyone would be surprised if he becomes a central striker in the near future. Chamberlain showcased some deadly footwork in the last minute, but this time his run merely resulted in a corner.

Even though the scoreline says 5-2 it was not a too impressive game from the Arsenal. Tottenham was down to ten men for the majority of the game and still managed to create some tensions until the last ten minutes or so. Now that the game is finished one might state that we were fairly comfortable once we had our lead, but it was really nerve-breaking during the actual game. Some of the greatest aspects of today's derby were the way we played, on occasions it was absolutely stunning, but also the performances of Walcott and Wilshere, to great young Englishmen.

Injury Update:
- Szczesny was finally back in goal after two months on the sidelines and it felt great to see him ruling that box again.

Arsenal vs. Fulham

3-3, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-11-10
Giroud 11, 69
Podolski 23

This was a game that we should have won, no matter what circumstances. If we are ever to win the league title we need to win these home games and as long as we keep failing at doing that we will not win anything, simple as that. We did not even deserve the win today, which you might have thought considering the opposition and venue.

We stared the game rather well, our first decent chance came when Giroud had a shot that went over the bar and just minutes later the Frenchman opened the scoring. Walcott won us a corner and decided to take it himself, which was a good decision as he found Olivier Giroud in the box who scored with a powerful header! One of few positives in the last couple of games is that our French striker has begun to find the back of the net and maybe people have been a little to eager to write him off. Approximately ten minutes after Giroud's opener we had a two-goal lead as a result of some brilliant play in the box. Cazorla played a stunning pass that went past Walcott to find Arteta, and our co-captain crossed it to Lukas Podolski for a fairly simple tap-in. Then we got to see what appeared to be a replay from the mid-week Champions League game, us losing a 2-0 lead. Our defending was extremely poor on both occasions since the Fulham goalscorers were more or less left completely alone in our box. Just before the half-time both teams had decent chances, Giroud headed the ball just over the bar and Fulham got even closer in the last minute when there was further chaos in our box.

The second half almost began as the first one when Walcott crossed the ball to Giroud after ten minutes, but this time the cross was slightly too high for the French striker. Five minutes later Walcott himself got close with a decent shot, unfortunately it went just wide of the goal. Disaster struck as Arteta made a huge blunder in his defensive duties and the result was a penalty for Fulham that they dispatched successfully. Theo continued his good form and almost produced an equalizer just after the penalty, but his shot was saved by the 'keeper this time. However, just a minute later we were back on level terms! Giroud hit the post when he found himself head-to-head with Schwarzer, Walcott picked up the rebound and his cross was headed into the back of the net by no other than Olivier Giroud! He might prove to be our top scorer yet. With fifteen minutes to go Koscielny made two fantastic blocks to deny Fulham a winner. He has received a lot of criticism lately, which makes it even more important to highlight his positives as they are less likely to be mentioned than the mistakes made. Giroud came close to scoring a hat-trick with a sizzling shot when there was ten minutes to go, yet the 'keeper managed to keep it out. Walcott appeared to pick up an injury and was replaced by Arshavin, hopefully it was more of a precautionary substitution since he has been one of our best players of late. There was quite some last minute drama when Arshavin's cross was stopped by the arm of a Fulham player and we were awarded a penalty, in the very last minute! However, Mikel Arteta's attempt for redemption after his part in the Fulham penalty ended in despair as Schwarzer saved the penalty and we had to settle for just the one point.

This was obviously one great disappointment, not just considering the last-minute penalty but the game as a whole. Though you should never rule anything out, it is no exaggeration to state that we are most likely out of the title-race already. But there will always be the cups and of course there is no point in giving up on the league just yet, one must quite simply just remain realistic about our chances at a trophy the way we are playing right now.

Injury Update;
- Szczesny, Ramsey and Oxlade-Chamberlain all back, yet they started on the bench. Ramsey brought on fifteen minutes into the second half and Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced with fifteen minutes left of the game.

Schalke 04 vs. Arsenal

2-2, Champions League, Veltins Arena, 2012-11-06
Walcott 18,
Giroud 26

We were ruthlessly efficient in the first half of this vital game and it looked as though we would grab those three, very important, points. Unfortunately we did not manage to hold onto the lead and had to settle for just the one point..

Schalke had a much stronger start, yet suddenly we found ourselves ahead in the eighteenth minute! Giroud was released down the centre (from an offside position) and when he was brought down in the box Theo Walcott popped up to pick up the ball and put it in the back of the net! The young Englishman has had quite some success up front recently, last week he scored a hat-trick against Reading in the Capital One Cup and then he opened the scoring for us in this game!
Our new French striker may have failed at scoring when Theo succeeded, but he got his chance to redeem missing out on that one. Olivier Giroud provided a powerful header to score from Podolski's cross less than ten minutes later!
The rest of the first half showcased chances for both sides, Giroud had another decent header towards the end of the half and Schalke had a shot that went just over the bar, before disaster struck in the very last of the added minutes. Huntelaar pulled one back for Schalke and our cushion was gone.

The second half started with another good chance for Giroud, but unfortunately his shot ended up next to the goal rather than in the goal. The pace of the game slowed down significantly in the second half, yet things heated up on the pitch when the ref decided to blow the whistle for an injury when we had a golden opportunity to score and Podolski even received a booking for his objections. Not long after that Vermaelen scored an own goal and those vital three points suddenly seemed very far away. Walcott had the chance to win us the game in the last minute, but unfortunately his shot was saved and we had to settle for the one point.

It is obviously disappointing for us to drop a 2-0 lead, especially when those three points could have ensured a top place in the group. Now we will most likely end up as runners-up, if we can get our act together and win the last games! Fingers crossed for that and a good ending to this group stage.

Injury Update;
- Ramsey picked up a slight injury ahead of this game and was therefore not involved this evening.

Manchester United vs. Arsenal

1-2, Premier League, Old Trafford, 2012-11-03
Cazorla 90 + 4

Well... This turned out to be quite a horrific game for us.

The nightmare began after just three minutes when Robin van Persie scored due to a fatal error from Vermaelen. The rest of the first half was rather uneventful, Ramsey had a decent shot at goal after approximately twenty minutes when he raced down the right-hand side, but aside from that we did not produce anything worth mentioning.

We had a positive start to second half, the introduction of Walcott clearly gave us a boost. For about twenty minutes, then 0-2 came. As Wilshere got sent off with approximately twenty minutes to go our previously slight chance of getting something out of the game was diminished.

At least we can say that we had the last say in this game! Santi Cazorla managed to get a shot away in the very last minute. I would not go as far as claiming that it regained our pride, it was only a consolation goal after all...

Injury Update;
- Gervinho will be out for about three weeks
- Oxlade-Chamberlain should not be too far away from returning from his injury.

Capital One Cup Quarter-Final Draw

We have been drawn another away game for the quarter-final of the Capital One Cup. This time, however, we will face Bradford City at the Coral Windows Stadium. After the historic comeback earlier this week you definitely feel that we are capable of producing any result in this cup, we will for sure enter this tie with confidence!

Reading vs. Arsenal

4-4 ( 7-5 after extra-time), Capital One Cup, Madejski Stadium, 2012-10-30
Walcott 45, 90 + 4, 120
Giroud 64,
Koscielny 89,
Chamakh 103, 120

What an absolutely magic turnaround this turned out to be! We found ourselves 4-0 down in the first half and some of the away fans were spotted leaving the stadium before the first half was even finished, thankfully they will have regretted that rather severely!

Our defence was poor during the first half, Koscielny had a overall poor game (e.g. scored an own goal) and young goalkeeper Martinez did not show dazzling skills either, but somehow we managed to turn it all around as well as improve the defence for the rest of the game. Just before the half-time whistle Theo Walcott pulled one back for us as he was released down the centre, his cheeky lob was the epithet of cool, calm and collected.

As mentioned, we seriously upped our game in the second half (which might not have been the most difficult achievement considering how poor we were in the first) and with an improvement in our play came the goals. The introduction of Olivier Giroud proved to be the deciding factor in this game, he was absolutely brilliant and his exquisite header right after coming on truly meant that we were back in the game! However, we were almost out of the game again before the next goal came, Laurent Koscielny got to redeem his earlier own-goal when he battled the ball into the back of the net just before the added time. The game appeared to be over as there were only four added minutes and they were all but over when Theo Walcott popped up and produced an amazing strike to bring the game into extra-time! Truly mind-blowing, even magical, stuff from the Arsenal this night!

Yet the magic was far from over, in the extra-time the most unlikely of players almost won us the game, none other than Marouane Chamakh! He has more or less been forgotten as an attacking-force of late, but his shot was stunning in its precision! Tensions ran high as Reading made it 5-5 soon after, yet this was always meant to be an amazing comeback for us. He scored right at the end of the first half, he scored right at the end of the second half and he scored right at the end of the extra-time. Theo Walcott had a hat-trick of unbelievable standards in this game completed by this late, emphatic, finish! However, he did not have the last say in this game as Marouane Chamakh showed composure to make it 7-5!

This is a cup game that will go down in history! An extraordinary game !!

Arsenal vs. Q.P.R.

1-0, Premier League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-10-27
Arteta 84

A remarkable improvement from the previous two games! (and yet we only just about managed to beat Q.P.R at the Emirates). Hopefully this win will grant us the confidence we've been lacking in front of goal lately and inspire us to get through this winter! And two major positives from this game is the return of Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna (+ Theo Walcott later on in the game)! Both of them looked great considering their lengthy absence, it sure felt great to see them back on the pitch.

We dominated both the possession and shot statistics, however, that has often proved to mean nothing when it comes to us. Since we did not have a single shot on target against Schalke it did feel brilliant to see us firing away several in this game and in the end it paid off!

It was rather absurd to find the scoreline at 0-0 for so long in the game considering how close we got on several occasions, for example, Ramsey had a header that hit the bar and Cazorla somehow managed to place his shot above the bar when he had a golden opportunity late on in the game. Then came the other Spaniard. Mikel Arteta may not score too often, but when he does it is always a memorable experience. Remember our game at home against Manchester City last season? The stunner that won that game might have looked slightly better, but I believe I speak for all fans when I say that I could not care less about that! Arshavin's cross ended up in front of goal and the first effort bounced off the bar back in the path of Mikel Arteta, who managed to put it in the back of the net this second chance!

With these three points we now have 15 points and at the time of writing this post we are 4th in the league (with one more game played than some of our opponents).

Injury Update:
- Gervinho picked up an injury in this game and had to be carried off on a stretcher, have no idea how bad it is at the moment.

Arsenal vs. Schalke 04

0-2, Champions League, Emirates Stadium, 2012-10-24

As the result might show, we did not manage to up our game from the weekend. We looked flat throughout the entire game, need I say any more than the fact that we did not have a single shot at target during the entire game..?

Schalke had a penalty shout in the first half, and we had one in the second, yet both 'divers' were only awarded with a yellow from the (Swedish) referee. We lost the game late on in the second half when Huntelaar scored and not long after that goal they scored another as we had taken off Jenkinson to provide some further attacking force.

There is literally no positive that I can see from this game, so let's just do like the players constantly says after these losses, look ahead to the next game! We will play QPR at home on Saturday, which ought to be interesting...

Injury Update;
- the following players are reportedly not far from returning from injury: Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere, Sagna and Gibbs. Meanwhile, Rosicky, Szczesny and Diaby are a few weeks away.

Norwich vs. Arsenal

0-1, Premier League, Carrow Road, 2012-10-20

It would seem as though we often suffer from the 'post-internationals syndrome'. On far more than one occasion we have not showed up for the first game back after internationals, needless to say it is a huge disappointment.

To be honest, the only positive I can find from this game is that Wilshere was on the bench! Even though he did not come on for this game, he cannot be far from making that long-awaited return now!

The goal conceded today should have been dealt with better, Mannone did not manage to hold onto the shot and Mertesacker was not quick enough to reach the rebound before the Norwich player. However, I do not think it right to put the blame on any particular players when the entire team played, as the manager put it, below par.

All that remains is a good reaction to this defeat with a vital win over Schalke 04 on Wednesday evening to put us at the top of the group in the Champions League!

Injury Update;
- Gibbs and Walcott are both close to returning from injury, possibly next weekend.
- Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up an injury within minutes of coming on in this game, not sure how serious the injury is though.
- Sagna is not far from returning to the first team, he has played a game for the reserves recently.

West Ham United vs. Arsenal

3-1, Premier League, Upton Park, 2012.10.06
Giroud 41,
Walcott 77,
Cazorla 83

Brilliant work ethic from the team in this tense game! The game was ever-changeable and even. We excelled, though, with around twenty chances against West Ham's around seven. We've now acquired three immense points in an ever-tightening title race.

We started off as the better team, putting lots of pressure on West Ham and right at the beginning Giroud had a decent shot at goal that the 'keeper just about managed to punch outside the post. Then, out of nowhere, we found ourselves behind even though we had dominated the game. It took us exactly twenty minutes to find the equalizer, West Ham upped their game considerably with their goal, but find it we did and it meant quite a lot for the goalscorer. Podolski raced down the left-hand side and produced a stunning cross that was met by Olivier Giroud! The tall Frenchman managed to poke the ball into the back of the net with his foot and you could tell from his celebrations that it meant a lot for him to get his first goal in the Premier League!

The second half was quite reversed from the first half, this time West Ham began the game the best and we were the team to catch them on the break to score, only this time it took a considerably longer time to do it. We should have been awarded a penalty when Ramsey was tripped in the box, however the ref seemed to have his eyes elsewhere at that moment.
Thankfully that didn't prove to be a pivotal moment in the game since Theo Walcott was released by a brilliant touch from Giroud and showed true composure to finish his run with an amazing shot! Unfortunately, rules concerning celebrating your goals has become ridiculous, you are no longer allowed to celebrate with the fans, so he got booked for celebrating his goal! However, that did not remove the feeling of heading towards three points! That feeling was only enforced when a certain Spaniard pulled off a strike that just cannot be labelled! Walcott got the ball to Santi Cazorla, whose shot was as if from another world! A shot that you have simply got to see.

After that it was simply a matter of seeing out the game and we did that rather comfortably. It was indeed a tough game but the win was definitely deserved!

Injury Update:
- Per Mertesacker was back in this game at centre-half and he looked solid.

Arsenal vs. Olympiacos

3-1, Champions League, Emirates, 2012.10.03
Gervinho 42,
Podolski 56,
Ramsey 90

What started off as a nervy and insecure game on our part ended in triumph! Where the first half definitely was Olympiacos' half, the second half was ours beyond a shadow of a doubt, it showed great mental strength to turn the game around as drastically as we did in the second half and that gained us three very important points!

As mentioned, the first half was no good half for us. Olympiacos were disciplined in their defence and we struggled to find any chances to score whereas they had several good chances from catching us on the break. The first forty-five minutes seemed to end in grand style when Gervinho fired a precise shot that was just out of the goalkeeper's reach! We got really lucky in that situation, as Arteta attempted to meet Podolski's cross, but failed at that and somehow the ball ended up at the feet of the Ivorian striker. However, the joy was short-lived as Olympiacos equalized mere minutes later from an opportunity that should have been dealt with by our centre-halves, who flanked the striker on both sides. A major disappointment yet Bould (Wenger will be back from suspension for the away game against Schalke) must have given some half-time talk because the team looked changed in the second half!

It was brilliant to see this "new" team! We found the flair from earlier in the season and played the game like it should be played. It goes without saying that we found the back of the net before long; and it was our new German striker who bagged his fourth goal in his eight appearance for the club! Lukas Podolski met Gervinho's cross in a crowded area but still managed to release a powerful shot that went below the 'keeper and into the goal!
To think that that settled the game would be a grave mistake. Olympiacos maintained their good play and we were far from certain of victory until the very last minute when Aaron Ramsey broke free from the defence (thanks to a brilliant header by Giroud) and cheekily chipped the ball past the 'keeper!

This leaves us in a great position, with two victories in the first two games. But we must be aware of the fact that Schalke have won both of their games as well, so the next game will be vital to win!

Injury Update;
- Diaby will be gone for about three weeks from an injury he picked up against Chelsea.
- Sagna and Wilshere are both getting close to a return to the first-team!

Arsenal vs. Chelsea

1-2, Premier League, Emirates, 2012.09.29
Gervinho 43

Today the Arsenal team from recent weeks didn't show up. Simple as that. I, for one, didn't recognize this team, what happened to our quick and purposeful passing game? Today most of our passes were sideways, rarely quick, concise and straight to the point. Our strong defence didn't show up either. Part of that might be down to the fact that Mertesacker was on the bench, who has been brilliant at the heart of our defence so far this season.

Chelsea were the better team for most of the game, to be fair. We didn't start the game particularly well, it was rather even but then they got a goal from a set-piece when Koscielny failed to keep Torres under control. However, just before half-time we got back on equal terms when Jenkinson's cross found its way to Gervinho, who turned to face the goal and pulled off a remarkable shot from standing completely still! After that goal glimpses of brilliance were seen from us, but then came the half-time whistle and the team looked poor again when they took to the pitch in the second half.

The goal that decided this game made the loss even worse. Mata's free-kick was turned into the back of the net through a deflection off Koscielny, who were the only one near the ball, under no pressure whatsoever. Our attempts to find a second equalizer were rather tame except for two chances, one that Podolski had before being replaced where his header was saved by Cech. The last good chance we had was when Giroud managed to get around Cech, yet his shot was just wide of the goal.

This is obviously a massively disappointing result, our first defeat of the season. I just hope that we will see a different Arsenal on Wednesday when we host Olympiacos at the Emirates.

Injury Update;
- Sagna resumed first team training again since suffering from a broken leg in May, which is really good news even though Jenkinson has done great so far this season!
- Szczesny is about two weeks away due to his ankle injury

Capital One Cup Fourth Round Draw

We have been drawn against Reading in the Capital One Cup fourth round! It will be an away game against the newly promoted side and it will take place on the 30 of October, that is a Tuesday.

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Arsenal vs. Coventry City

6-1, Capital One Cup, Emirates Stadium, 2012.09.26
Giroud 39,
Chamberlain 57,
Arshavin 64,
Walcott 73, 90,
Miquel 80

Sorry for forgetting to mention this cup earlier when the draw took place! The Carling Cup is no more, the League Cup is nowadays called the Capital One Cup. Obviously we were drawn against Coventry in this third round and since the draw for the fourth round is taking place later tonight I shall try and post the result of that tomorrow.
Unfortunately this game wasn't shown on any channel that I've got here in Sweden, but thanks to the Arsenal Player I was able to get audio for this game!

The team was a mix of experience and youth, as it tends to be in the League Cup. The game started
on an even level with plenty of chances for Coventry but a domination in possession from Arsenal. As the first half progressed we created more and more chances, Giroud had a decent shot after thirty-five minutes. Not long after this the French international would get his first goal for the Arsenal. Arshavin played a brilliant ball forward to Coquelin who passed it to Olivier Giroud who cheekily lifted the ball over the 'keeper!

The second half began on a good note as well as a bad note for us. We played some great football and was awarded with a penalty when Arshavin was brought down. Giroud stepped up to take the penalty (after a brief pause as some supporters ran onto the pitch) but he saw his penalty saved by the 'keeper! It was a good penalty but an even better save and on the resulting corner Ignasi Miquel headed the ball into the crossbar. We would, however, get our two-goal cushion before long. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain released a powerful and precise shot from outside the area that went straight into the top corner! Brilliant stuff from the young Englishman and we'll hope to see more of that from him in the near future!
Things continued in the same manner as we increased our lead to 3-0 when Andrey Arshavin received a great pass from Giroud and poked it past the Coventry 'keeper. It was the first goal from the Russian captain in a while and it is certainly a great boost if he is back in proper shape.

About midway through the second half Frimpong made his return from the knee injuries that have tormented him for the past nine months. Just after that substitution Theo Walcott made the scoreline 4-0 when he outpaced his defender and unleashed a shot packed with power that went into the back of the net!
Coventry pulled one back in the 79th minute yet it proved to be naught but a consolation goal since we answered that goal with one of our own. This time it was our Spanish defender Ignasi Miquel who got to score! He met Arshavin's cross with a terrific header that left the 'keeper without a chance.
The following minutes saw a flurry of chances for both teams but after that the game ebbed out a bit but there was still time enough left for one last goal. The game ended 6-1 due to Theo Walcott's second goal of the evening, proving yet again what an amazing asset his speed is and mixing it with a brilliant shot!

A terrific display by the team and what better way to prepare for the game against Chelsea on Saturday..?

Manchester City vs. Arsenal

1-1, Premier League, Etihad Stadium, 2012-09-23
Koscielny 82

This game looked to be heading in the direction that we've seen on many occasions with Arsenal in the big games, we play really good yet somehow we manage to lose. Well, maybe we're past that this year!

We dominated the beginning of the first half, played some brilliant football and created some great chances. Gervinho came close to scoring when he made a great run into the box, unfortunately his touch was too heavy and Hart could grab the ball. However, we weren't good enough as we conceded from a corner when Mannone failed to punch it clear and Lescott could head it in at the end of the half.

The second half didn't look as an improvement for us, at the start that is. City had the most possession but we fought our way back into the game and as the end drew near we were the ones who dominated in possession and chances. Then, finally, we were rewarded for our efforts! This was a game of centre-halves scoring from corners, it would prove, as Laurent Koscielny found himself by the ball with a small piece of space following Cazorla's corner; and he fired it into the back of the net! Right in front of the away fans who erupted into euphoric celebrations along with the players! It was an amazing scene and one that will be remembered for quite some time!
City came dangerously close to scoring the minute after when Kompany attempted an overhead kick, which was saved by Mannone but then a clearing ended up at the feet of Agüero, whose shot was (fortunately) off-target!

We are currently located at the fifth place of the table, which is good since we've played many difficult away games in the past couple of games. Next up is Chelsea at the Emirates, which will be yet another test but so far we've done excellent so let's hope we continue that run!

Injury Update;
- Vermaelen missed out on this game through an illness.
- Wilshere and Frimpong have both resumed full-training and are getting closer to a return in the team!
- Sagna is about two weeks away and Rosicky is about three weeks away at the moment.

Montpellier vs. Arsenal

2-1, Champions League: Group B, La Mosson, 2012-09-18
Podolski 16,
Gervinho 18

A massive away victory! To win your first game of the group stage is always a treat, but to do it on an away ground is impressive, not to mention away against last year's French Champions! It was truly nail-biting towards the end, but we held onto our three points and they were well deserved.

Like the game on Saturday, we were much better in the first half. We were unlucky to get a penalty against us early in the game, you don't see those situations awarded with penalties often! But in the end our early domination proved to be too much for the French. We basically played circles around Montpellier in the beginning and finding ourselves 1-0 down will only increase the pressure.
Our two top scorers so far this season struck one each to win us this game, much to the satisfaction of the away fans. The equalizer came through our three new players. Cazorla played a ball toward Giroud, who at once played it onwards toward Lukas Podolski. The German striker had just enough time to ensure that his shot would go past the 'keeper and into the back of the net.
We didn't have to wait long for the goal that would grant us the victory. Just two minutes later Jenkinson produced a brilliant cross that was met by Gervinho, who scored from close-range.

The rest of the game was a mix of chances for both teams, but as the end drew nearer Montpellier built up quite some pressure. Fortunately we held on to ensure that we'd start this Champions League campaign with a victory.

Next up for us in the Champions League is a home game against Olympiacos, which we quite frankly just have to win! However, before that we have some league games. I have the Manchester City game on Sunday in mind particularly. It will doubtless be a tough game but we can beat them if we keep playing like we have recently.

Injury Update;
- Diaby played the entire game and looked as though he has recovered from his injury.

Arsenal vs. Southampton

6-1, Premier League, Emirates, 2012-09-15
Hooiveld 11 (og),
Podolski 31,
Gervinho 35, 71,
Clyne 37 (og),
Walcott 89

What a game by the Arsenal! This was the best I've seen us play for quite some time! We were especially radiant in the first half, the team played in perfect unison. It felt as though the team truly came together in this game, along with a breathtaking passing game!

The first half in particular showcased Arsenal at its best. We played a fast-paced passing game (not really news) with exact precision and players who complemented each other perfectly. We put Southampton under pressure from the first minute and didn't stop until the ref blew his whistle to mark the end of the half.
Even though the first goal was an own goal it was only made possible by some brilliance from Podolski and Gibbs in particular. The German striker showed amazing strength when he managed to keep the ball when surrounded by Southampton players and he played it out to Gibbs, whose cross would've met Podolski if it wasn't for the fact that Hooiveld got in between to score an unfortunate own goal.
Getting an early goal is always crucial in these games, but we were not quite done yet with the half. Lukas Podolski would get his goal when he struck a free-kick superbly, mixing power with precision to find the back of the net. It was an astounding goal and it was met with chants of 'he scores when he wants' from all around the Emirates.
This game would also prove to be a fruitful one for our Ivorian winger, who scored a brace in this game. His first goal was without doubt his most beautiful. Arteta provided the skilled assist, Gervinho made a great run  and finished the move off with a shot by the near-post.
The half ended with two goals scored by Southampton, one which was yet another own goal and once again it was Gibbs who provided it as his cross was deflected in by Clyne. The only disappointment of this game came at the end of the first half when Szczesny failed to collect the ball and it dropped straight at the feet of Danny Fox, who put it in the back of the empty net. It's obviously always disappointing to concede, especially when we had had a good run of clean sheets, but shit happens and as long as we score more than we concede we have no cause for complaint!

We dropped a lot of our pace and urgency in the second half, yet that does not mean that we became idle. It's only natural that a team cannot maintain as fast a pace as we had kept in the first half, couple that with the fact that Southampton upped their game for the second half and you get that the game will have slowed down a bit. However, we kept the control of the game and managed to squeeze in two more goals before the end of the game.
Aaron Ramsey came on in the second half and it did not take long before the Welsh captain made an impact. He made a great run that took him past the defence and produced an even greater shot that deserved to find the back of the net. Unfortunately it hit the post, but Gervinho was quick to tap the rebound in. An easy goal for the Ivorian, yet it is an important quality for a striker to know where to be and when, which he definitely proved with this goal.
It was a former Southampton player who got to round the game off with a goal of his own. No, I'm not talking about the Ox. The move was created by Santi Cazorla (as more or less all of our moves these days, the Spaniard is utterly amazing with his technique) who sneaked a ball in for Vermaelen, who himself had ventured far from his defensive role. The Belgian's shot was saved by the 'keeper, but the ball found its way to Theo Walcott who released a powerful shot to make the scoreline 6-1. The Englishman had been ill earlier in the week, missing out on an international game, but there was no trace of that in his shot.

6-1 may look good, but let's not get carried away. Next up is the opening game of the Champions League against Montpellier, then we have two tough games in the Premier League. Next weekend it's away against Manchester City and then we play Chelsea at home the weekend after. Those are quite some tests that we have ahead of us, let's hope that we're up to the challenge!

Injury Update;
- Diaby picked up a slight injury whilst on international duty for France. He could've played in this game, but just as a precaution he was rested.
- Wilshere, Frimpong and Sagna are all approaching their return to the squad, it shouldn't be long for any of them now.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal

2-0, Premier League, Anfield, 2012-09-02
Podolski 31,
Cazorla 68

We are finally back in the goalscoring business, and we're in it with style. After two goalless draws we have claimed a fantastic win away against Liverpool and we've kept our third clean-sheet of the season whilst doing it! Also great for two of our new boys, Podolski and Cazorla, to get on the score-sheet and build up some confidence for the rest of the season.

This game was played at a fast pace over the entire ninety minutes. However, I do get the feeling that that only played to our advantage. It is difficult for one team to try and up the pace of the game alone and as we prefer short, quick passes we are good at playing a fast paced game. The first half was pretty much all over the place, but we were the ones who found ourselves ahead at half time. Lukas Podolski started a counter-attack by playing the ball to Cazorla and then going on an amazing run into the box, where the Spaniard found him with a perfect pass and the German attacker could place the ball past Reina. This was our first goal of the season and the relief was evident on all of the players, we are finally on our way!

In the second half Liverpool began building up more pressure, especially through the introduction of Downing. But we managed to hold strong and scored through yet another brilliant run, this time from our new Spaniard. Santi Cazorla made the run into the box, received a pass from Podolski (reversed roles this time around) and got a shot at Reina in a really tight angle. I, for one, did not think that it would go in when I saw Reina get his body over the ball, but it squeezed in below him and we had our two-goal lead! It felt great to have the cushion and it truly felt as though we were going to get our first win!

I don't know whether we should thank Steve Bould for this new and strong defence, but something has changed over the summer and we managed to hold on to the lead and keep our third clean-sheet. Thomas Vermaelen were brilliant at the heart of the defence and Kieran Gibbs has made huge improvements over the summer, he might very well be our best player so far this season. Another player to stand out in this game, although who isn't a defender, is Abou Diaby. He was a ledge in the midfield who won the ball and created lots of chances.

Now we face an international break, but two weeks from now we face Southampton at the Emirates on Saturday.

Injury Update;
-Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to pick up an injury in the second half and was replaced by Ramsey.
-Thomas Vermaelen was replaced in the 90th minute, hopefully it was nothing serious!

Champions League Group Draw

The annual Champions League Group Draw took place today and we have ended up in a rather tough group I'd say.

We will face FC Schalke 04, Olympiacos FC and Montpellier Hérault SC.

The campaign will start off away against Olivier Giroud's old club and French champions Montpellier. We then go on to face Olympiacos at the Emirates. That is followed by yet another encounter at the Emirates, this time against the German team, Schalke. Then it is a tough away trip to Germany followed by the return game against Montpellier at home. We end the group stage in Greece against Olympiacos.

So there will be lots of tough games and trips, but if we can get the goals coming we will definitely qualify for the next stage!

Stoke City vs. Arsenal

0-0, Premier League, Britannia Stadium, 2012-08-26

It is not a bad result to get a draw away against Stoke, especially considering our history at the Britannia. It is, however, disappointing to start the season with two nil-nil results... The team needs some time to get together, we have three new players up front and it feels as though they're getting better and better.

The one thing that disappointed me the most about this game was the Stoke fans. How insane are you when you boo at a young player who got his leg broken at the turf several seasons ago? Their player, Shawcross, makes a completely reckless tackle and Ramsey is out for a year, who should be booing who...? It enrages me beyond words.

We dominated the game, had more than twice as many chances to score and ten corners compared to Stoke who had none. Podolski should have been awarded with a penalty when his shot was blocked by the arm of one defender, sadly it all happened too fast for the ref to see it. Throughout the game we just kept on shooting and creating chances, whilst also dealing with Stoke's counter-attacks.

Even though it's disappointing to start the season with two 0-0 results one has to acknowledge that a draw away against Stoke is a good result and now we have to look ahead and hopefully ensure the first victory of the season away against Liverpool on Sunday.

Injury Update;
-Szczesny picked up an injury before the game and was replaced by Mannone, who clearly did well since he kept the clean-sheet.
-Oxlade-Chamberlain made his return when he came on in the second half, however, he was the only one to make it back for this game of the injured ones.

Arsenal vs. Sunderland

0-0, Premier League, The Emirates, 2012-08-18

Football has finally returned for real! It has been a good summer, filled with European and Olympic football, but the league is what we've all been waiting for!

0-0 against Sunderland may not feel like a good result, and I'm not saying that it is, but you have to take into consideration that it's the first game of the season and the new signings are always going to take some time to adjust. Considering what we've lost this summer (Robin van Persie to Manchester United and Alex Song to Barcelona) we will rely on these new signings, so let's hope that they will all feel more comfortable for the next game away against Stoke. The result feels even  better considering the fact that both Tottenham and Manchester United lost their opening games, so we're ahead of them at least!

Thomas Vermaelen, our new captain, led the team out and co-captain Mikel Arteta was also on display. We dominated the entire game, no question about it. Sunderland had one good chance in the beginning of the first half when our defence failed at an offside attempt, but otherwise than that they had nothing really. The two best chances we had were created by two of our new signings, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud. The former looked amazing, definitely the one that impressed the most in this first game. He created pretty much all our chances (for this round he was the one who created the most chances out of all the teams, 7 in total) and he took most of our corners as well. He looked typically Spanish, brilliant technique and quick feet. His sizzling shot toward the top corner of the goal was, as mentioned above, definitely one of the best goalscoring chances we had!

Lukas Podolski started the game along with Cazorla, but playing alone up front is never easy and even though he worked well and hard through the game he didn't stand out as much as the Spaniard. Olivier Giroud came on in the second half and got really close to scoring when he found himself on a close-ranged one-on-one with the 'keeper. Unfortunately his effort was put wide.

Another player who at least felt like a new signing started the game today, Abou Diaby. He has suffered from a lot of injuries during his time at the Arsenal and it was really good to see him start this game. He has had a good pre-season and looked well, just needs some time to adapt to the pace of the league I reckon.

All in all we have to look at the positives, and the new signings will, for sure, bring a lot to the team.

Next up is Stoke on Sunday, and that will always be a tough game, especially away. We've always conceded plenty of goals against team, but considering this clean-sheet and the fact that we now have Steve Bould as assistant manager I should think that the defence has been sorted out over the summer. At least you can always hope for it.

I watched this game live at the Emirates and somehow I always manage to time my yearly with a 0-0 game. We rarely play 0-0, and three of my four games there have ended 0-0 (with the fourth ending 1-2, so no improvement there). But that special feeling of being at the Emirates will always remain, no matter the result.

Injury Update;
- Jack Wilshere is not far from returning now! It is devastating that he has missed out on more than a year, especially this early in his career, but with his return you do feel that we will be a stronger side! The boss estimated his return to full-training to about a month.
- Bacary Sagna is on the same course as Wilshere! More or less a month will mark his return to full-training along with Emmanuel Frimpong.
- Both Laurent Koscielny and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up minor knocks during pre-season that prevented them from playing in this game, but they will most like be back for the Stoke game or the Liverpool game.

FC Cologne vs. Arsenal

4-0, Pre-season Friendly, Rhein Energie Stadion, 2012-08-12
Vermaelen 5,
Podolski 15 (pen), 43,
Gervinho 62

All of our three new signings played the first half of this game, and they all did really well! Lukas Podolski scored a brace against his former side and Cazorla along with Giroud provided and came close to scoring on several occasions.

Within 5 minutes we took the lead, when Thomas Vermaelen headed the ball into the back of the net from a Cazorla corner. Ten minutes later, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain evaded one tackle in the box, but the second brought him down harshly and penalty was awarded. Lukas Podolski stepped up to take it and converted it, he did not celebrate the goal, though, out of respect for his former team most like. Giroud had tons of chances, but each time the 'keeper got in the way and managed some amazing saves. However, the third goal of the game went to our new German player. Lukas Podolski started the move by passing it out to Gibbs, then he raced into the box to meet Gibbs' cutback, and he finished the move with a powerful strike.

At half-time the entire team changed and Cologne looked for a way back into the game. That was quickly extinguished, though, as Gervinho raced down the left, got past two defenders and scored with a low shot past the 'keeper. A brilliant move that we can only hope to see more of.

After this the game slowed down and in the end it was a comfortable victory. It was great for us to keep a clean sheet right before the start of the season. Our first game will be at home against Sunderland.

Now I'll be off to London and the Emirates for that very game!

Signing: Santi Cazorla

On the 7th of August Arsenal sealed their third signing of the summer, the Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla.

My personal experiences of the 27-year-old has been from watching the national team, he has featured for Spain in 45 games, which is quite impressive. A player that has played for the Spanish national team is a player to be reckoned with, I'd say.

He is an attacking midfielder and it will be interesting to see what he can accomplish in the Arsenal shirt.

Kitchee FC vs. Arsenal

2-2, Pre-Season Friendly, Hong Kong Stadium, 2012-07-29
Walcott 24,
Eisfeld 77

This was the last game of the Asia Tour of 2012, and it proved to be a difficult one as well.

We had a rather poor first half, and found ourselves 2-1 down, even though Theo Walcott equalized when his shot rolled in by the near post. However, a lot of credit for the goal must go to Abou Diaby. The midfielder won the ball and provided a brilliant pass to the young English winger.

Our defending improved much in the second half, where it had been poor in the first. We enjoyed most of the possession as well, but it took quite a long time before we managed to equalize again. And yet again, most of the credit must go to the provider. Gervinho made an amazing run to the left, and made it rather easy for Thomas Eisfeld to finish the move.

As mentioned above, this was the last game of the Asia Tour, and the team will now be heading back to London to continue the pre-season preparations.

Arsenal vs. Manchester City

0-2, Pre-season Friendly, Beijing National Stadium, 2012-07-27

Even though the result, obviously, is really disappointing, there are plenty of positives to take from this game. Kyle Bartley said in a post-game interview that pre-season is for making mistakes, and he is really onto something there, you make mistakes and experiment a bit in pre-season and then you just make sure that the mistakes aren't repeated once the season begins.

What I really liked about our display in this game was the amount of shooting. The players took many shots and many of them were good ones! In the first half Theo Walcott had a wonderful shot that unfortunately went just over the far post. And the hands down best strike of the game was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's screamer that hit both the posts! You don't see that very often!

There were plenty of substitutions in the game, so that pretty much every player got to play a part in the game. That, of course, means that the performance will be a bit more unstable, as new players come in with new parts to play.

Overall it was a very enjoyable game with plenty of creativity going forward.

Malaysia XI vs. Arsenal

2-1, Pre-Season Friendly, National Stadium Bukit Jalil, 2012-07-24
Eisfeld 87,
Aneke 90

This was the first friendly of the Asia Tour this year, and what a game it proved to be!

Malaysia scored just before half-time, and at half-time the entire Arsenal team was changed! Well, all except for the 'keeper that is, Mannone was the only player to last the entire 90 minutes for us.
It took pretty much the entire second half for us to find the equalizer, young Tomas Eisfeld scored that one. Then, just at the end of the game another youngster, this time Chuks Aneke, found the back of the net to win us the game through a deflected shot.

As the boss said after the game, the result doesn't really matter this early in the pre-season, some of the lads have only had three days of pre-season training! But it's always sweet with victory, and a turn-around none the less!

The Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup

The Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup was a cup consisting of matches played for 45 minutes during the 14th of July. Arsenal started off with a clash against Anderlecht and finished the cup with a game against the hosts (who just got promoted to the Premier League), Southampton. Both games were held at the St Mary's Stadium.

2012-07-14

Anderlecht vs. Arsenal
0-1

Henri Lansbury marked his return from loan with a winning goal against Anderlecht in the first game of the cup. However, Anderlecht began the game best, they scored a goal within five minutes.Yet the goal was, as the scoreline implies, deemed offside (correctly).
Chamakh had a shot blocked by the Anderlecht 'keeper before Henri Lansbury could win the game for us. Carl Jenkinson made a great run forward and provided an excellent cross for the young Englishman to finish at close-range.

Southampton vs. Arsenal
1-1 (Southampton won 5-4 on penalties)

In the final game of the tournament Arsenal faced the hosts, Southampton. The game went all the way to penalties, as Gervinho equalised the scoreline in the first half.
Southampton began the shoot-out, and scored. Then Andre Santos stepped up, and scored as well. Southampton converted the next penalty, as did Francis Coquelin for us. Once again Southampton scored, and once again we equalised, this time through the young Swedish talent Kristoffer Olsson. Southampton proved spotless in this penalty shoot-out, as their next two penalties went in, and in between those two Craig Eastmond got to score as well. However, the shoot-out came to an end when young Kyle Ebecilio missed his penalty.

Even though we lost our last game, we won the cup! So we got to lift the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup, hopefully we'll get to lift far grander trophies as the season develops! (no offence intended!)

UEFA European Championship - The Final

Spain vs. Italy
4-0

Even though no Arsenal players were involved in the final of the tournament I'd like to write a short piece of it, if for no other reason than to wrap this European Cup up.

The scoreline of this game is rather shocking. I mean, a final that ends 4-0. When was the last time that happened...?

Spain were in control of this game from beginning to start. Within fifteen minutes they scored their first. Cesc Fabregas made an excellent run into the box, rounded the defender and delivered a stunning pass for Silva to head in. The second came at the end of the first half through yet another excellent run, this time by Alba, who managed to score when he found himself one-on-one with Buffon. Spain sealed their victory with two strikes late on in the second half. This time it was Chelsea players Torres and Mata who scored for the European as well as World Champions.

This result means that Spain now has won the European Championship of 2008, The World Cup of 2010 and, finally, the European Championship of 2012. An astonishing achievement!

Signing: Olivier Giroud

This week our second signing of the summer was completed. Olivier Giroud is a 25-year old striker from France. He was the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 21 goals in 36 games and he is arriving from the French champions, Montpellier.

It will certainly be exciting to see what he has to offer, and with this second striker recently signed we've got plenty of options up-front for the new season.

Olivier Giroud, holding up his new shirt.

UEFA European Championship - Update 13

Germany vs. Italy
1-2

Germany's stay in the tournament came to an end in the semi-finals. Lukas Podolski started the game for the Germans, who were completely stunned to find themselves 2-0 down at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, Podolski was replaced at half-time, and Germany did not find the equalizer after scoring from the penalty spot in the final minutes. Per Mertesacker did not feature for Germany.

This means that the final will be between Spain and Italy.

UEFA European Championship - Update 12

England vs. Italy
0-0
0-0
Penalties: Italy wins, 4-2

The first 0-0 game of the tournament featured neither Theo Walcott nor Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the start, but the former came on around the 60th minute. The game was, as knock-out games usually are, rather careful and slow. However, it did have moments of brilliance from both teams when they got close to scoring. Theo put in a decent display given chances that he had, which sadly weren't that many. England seemed to prefer attacking from the left-hand side or just quite simply focus on getting balls up to Andy Carroll who were to pass it on to Rooney. And when Theo did go into amazing runs, who if not Tottenham player Scott Parker were there to lend him several disappointing passes. England's bad luck when it comes to penalties keeps going strong and misses from Ashley Young and Ashley Cole meant that the Italians are through to the semi-final against Germany.

UEFA European Championship - Update 11

Spain vs. France
2-0

Laurent Koscielny earned his first cap of the tournament in France's last game of the tournament. The centre-half worked tirelessly for the French during the entire game and proved to be one reason as to how France kept themselves in the game for as long as they did. He came up against former team-mate Cesc Fabregas, and stood his ground very well indeed. Spain took the lead, however, through an attack down their left-hand side where the French defender slipped to give Alba the chance for an excellent cross to Alonso on the right-hand side, who in turn headed it into goal. France didn't have much going forward, and in the end it was a deserved win for Spain who sealed the win in injury-time through a penalty scored by Alonso.

This result means that Spain will face Portugal in the semi-final.

UEFA European Championship - Update 10

Germany vs. Greece
4-2

For the first time this tournament Lukas Podolski did not play for Germany, and, once again, neither did Per Mertesacker. Germany took the lead in the first half, and even though the Greeks managed to pull one back the game ended very much to the liking of the Germans. At 1-1 they started to take off and soon enough the scoreline had changed to 4-1 for Germany. Greece pulled one back in the final minutes from the penalty spot, but it was not enough and the result means that Germany will face either England or Italy in the semi-final.

UEFA European Championship - Update 9

Czech Republic vs. Portugal
0-1

Due to former injury problems, Tomas Rosicky did not feature for the Czechs as their stay in the tournament came to an end at the hands of the Portuguese. The game was rather dismal, both teams had a rather careful approach, and in the second half Ronaldo scored to get Portugal through to the semi-finals.

UEFA European Championship - Update 8

Sweden vs. France
2-0

Once again, Laurent Koscielny was left on the bench as France went through to the quarters, finishing second in group D. On a more positive note, Mexes is suspended for the quarter final that France will play against Spain, so there is a great chance of Laurent getting to play then!

Ukraine vs. England
0-1

Neither Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nor (remarkably) Theo Walcott got to start in the final group game for England. However, Theo came on with about twenty minutes to go (could be that he was on the bench because of the slight injury problem he picked up against Sweden) and Alex came on for the final minutes. Even though neither of them managed to score or assist any goal for England this time around they put in two good performances (for however brief a moment) and are looking good for the quarter final where England will face Italy, having finished top of the group.

UEFA European Championship - Update 7

Denmark vs. Germany
1-2

Nicklas Bendtner and Lukas Podolski both started this game for their respective teams, with Mertesacker once again restricted to the bench. Both players proved vital for their team, but I would like to start with Bendtner. Because, even though this result means that Denmark's time in the tournament is over, he's been absolutely brilliant for the Danes. He has led the line for all three games superbly and won pretty much all aerial challenges (not to mention scoring twice against Portugal). I, for one, would fancy seeing him up front just in front of van Persie this autumn.
Back to this game, Germany dominated throughout the entire game and took the lead after nineteen minutes. And guess who scored on his 100th game for the national team...? Who else but Lukas Podolski himself! He fired a sizzling shot past Andersen which meant that Germany definitely was through for the quarter-finals (remarkably, winning the two former games might not have been enough for the Germans).
Denmark came up with a quick response though, and it was created (as so often for the Danes) through the head of Nicklas Bendtner. This time he turned provider and headed a corner straight to the goalscorer from the game against the Netherlands, Krohn-Dehli.
The game got slower after that, and Bendtner should have gotten a penalty near the end when Badstuber tugged harshly at the Danish striker's shirt. Yet, the Germans had the last say in the game when Lars Bender scored late on to seal the qualification for Germany.

This result means that we will see no more of Nicklas Bendtner in this tournament as his Denmark has been knocked out, ending at a third place.

Portugal vs. Netherlands
2-1

Robin van Persie did not manage to provide the magic we've seen all season for Arsenal for the Netherlands in this tournament. Disappointingly, the Netherlands have ended up on zero points from three games and have only managed to score twice in these European games.
Hopefully, this means that Robin will stay with us for more seasons and return for pre-season training earlier (and through that, not miss the start of the season).
I did not see this game, as the only game showed on the telly was Denmark-Germany, so I did not get to see van Persie's last game in the tournament. But from what I've heard, he was put on the right-hand side of the midfield and did not get many chances to score in throughout the game.

Germany finished top of the group, with Portugal as runners-up. This means that Podolski and Mertesacker will face Greece in the quarter-finals, and Rosicky (if fit) will face Portugal in the quarters.

Saturday, June 16, 2012

UEFA European Championship - Update 6

Poland vs. Czech Republic
0-1

Tomas Rosicky was not fit enough to feature for the Czechs in this game, having picked up a slight injury. Hopefully he'll be back for the quarter-final that the Czech Republic will be playing. Wojciech Szczesny missed out on this last game for Poland, having picked up a red card in the first game he was not to make it back into the starting eleven.

Greece vs. Russia
1-0

Andrey Arshavin played the full ninety minutes but could not save Russia from elimination. This shocking result means that Greece will go through to the quarters instead of Russia.

UEFA European Championship - Update 5

Ukraine vs. France
0-2

Laurent Koscielny was an unused substitute for France in their two-nil victory against Ukraine.

Sweden vs. England
2-3

Both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on as second half substitutes for England against Sweden, and the former in particular proved why he should have been in the starting line-up.
England started the game by taking the lead through a header from Carroll, and kept it into half-time. However, as soon as the game kicked off again Olof Mellberg equalised for the Swedes and within ten minutes the same player (a centre-half, that is) gave them the lead.
Then (finally) Hodgson decided it was time for Theo to make his mark on this tournament. The winger came on in the 61st minute and immediately changed the course of the game. England won a corner that was headed clear from goal, straight into the path of Mr Walcott who fired instantly, curving the ball beautifully above Isaksson in the Swedish goal. His celebration included a casual shrug, which was pretty much spot on, as I think pretty much everyone expected that one to be cleared by Isaksson. However, it was a well struck goal from Theo, and very much deserved since he brought endless of pace and energy to England in this game. Not long after his goal he set up the winner for Welbeck. Using his pace at its best capacity, he squeezed between two defenders and placed the ball backwards, straight to Welbeck who, cheekily, heeled the ball into the back of the net. When the last minutes were approaching Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced, and came close to scoring from a Walcott cross. Sadly, Gerrard got in the way of the young Englishman, and the chance was wasted.

This result means that Sweden has no chance whatsoever of qualifying, whereas England find themselves second to France (on goal difference) in group D.

UEFA European Championship - Update 4

Greece vs. Czech Republic
1-2

Tomas Rosicky played a huge part in the Czech Republic win against Greece. The captain was behind both goals (and pretty much everything the Czechs created) and led the team superbly with an excellent and tireless performance. The two goals for the Czechs came within the first five minutes, making the came rather comfortable for them until the Greeks pulled one back in the second half. However, The Czechs prevailed and recorded their first victory and their first three points in the tournament.

Poland vs. Russia
1-1

As you'd already know, Wojciech Szczesny was not allowed to play in this game due to his red card in the first game, but Andrey Arshavin once again captained the Russians. He has been brilliant so far in the tournament and put in yet another brilliant display against Poland.

Denmark vs. Portugal
2-3

Nicklas Bendtner was set to become the hero of the day for the Danes, when his brace equalled the scoreline against Portugal, however, a late goal from the Portuguese rendered his goals useless. Portugal started the game the best and found themselves two-nil up before long. Just before half-time the Danes pulled one, oh so important goal, back when Bendtner headed the ball into the back of the net from close range. Denmark then upped their game in the second half and Nicklas scored a powerful header, that bounced off both keeper and post before smashing into goal! However, it was not to be a lucky day for the Danes (like it was against the Netherlands) and in the final minutes they lost the game.

Netherlands vs. Germany
1-2

Things are not looking good for the Netherlands after this defeat, meaning that they have zero points ahead of the last game on Sunday. Robin van Persie and Lukas Podolski both played the entire game, whilst Per Mertesacker found himself on the bench once again. Germany were the better team throughout the entire game, van Persie got little if not no support up front. After the first half the Germans were two-nil up, but in the second half the Dutch upped their game slightly. However, it was a moment of brilliance from our skipper that granted the Netherlands a way back into this game. With seventeen minutes left the striker made his way towards the goal and fired away a sizzling shot! He had had several decent shots saved earlier in the game, but this one proved impossible for Neuer to grab and it meant that Robin opened his account in this tournament. Sadly, it will most likely be a short tournament for the Dutch. Since they failed to find the back of the net again they have zero points from the last two games, meaning that they have a very slight chance to go through. If Germany beats Denmark and the Netherlands beat Portugal by at least two goals, they will go through along with Germany. The group of Death proves deserving of its name.

UEFA European Championship - Update 3

France vs. England
1-1

Not many people would have guessed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would start the game against France, but he did and he did it with style! Theo Walcott came on in the 90th minute, which to be fair really isn't enough playing time for an established player like the young winger. Laurent Koscielny spent the entire game on the bench.
It was an even game, it was predicted ahead of the game by none other than Bacary Sagna that the game would be similar to a derby, and in that respect the game was rather disappointing. It was obvious that no team wanted to lose, since the game was really careful and passive at times. Chamberlain did well in his first game in a major tournament for the Three Lions. He offered speed and creativity throughout the game, something that the English were in a shortage of, and was replaced midway through the second half. An early goal scored by Lescott from a corner created a perfect situation for England. However, before the first half ended Samir Nasri equalised for France and that proved to be the final scoreline.

(For all those interested in ex-Arsenal players I can report that our former skipper Cesc Fabregas scored for Spain in their 1-1 draw with Italy yesterday).

UEFA European Championship - Update 2

The Netherlands vs. Denmark
0-1

This Championship is full of surprises! Who would've thought that Denmark would beat the Netherlands in the opening game of Group B? Our two men in this game, Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner, both led the line for their respective teams, being the two centre forwards.
The Dutch dominated this game from start to finish, and our prolific goalscorer created plenty of opportunities. However, it was not to be the Dutchmen's day. The Danes shocked the entire stadium, if not the entire continent of Europe, by taking the lead in the first half, after being thoroughly outplayed by the Dutch. The pressure from the Netherlands was immense, but, as mentioned, it was not their day. They had two claims for hand ball in the penalty area discarded by the ref, which was rather harsh. Focusing on the two Arsenal players, they both did well. Of course, since the Netherlands failed to score it was not a very good day for Robin, but I felt that he did all that he could, towards the end he was virtually the only one putting pressure on the Danes and chasing after the ball. On the other side of the pitch, Bendtner didn't get many opportunities, but he worked tirelessly up front, pressuring the centre halves.

Germany vs. Portugal
1-0

It was a day of narrow wins in Group B yesterday. The clash between Germany and Portugal was tight, but a late goal from Gomez claimed the win for the Germans. We had one Arsenal player (well, close enough) in this game in Lukas Podolski (since Per Mertesacker was on the bench). This was the first real good look I got of the new signing, and I thought he looked like a real team player. He worked really well on the left-hand side, seemingly really quick and clever. I certainly look forward to seeing more of him in the future.
